The deadline to request to be included in the 2022 Census of Agriculture is fast approaching; sign up by June 30th.

The 2022 Census of Agriculture is a survey conducted every five years by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) to get a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. The ag census has been conducted for over 180 to be a “source of comprehensive and impartial agricultural data for every state and county in the nation,” according to a Southeast AgNet article. The deadline to sign up to be included in the survey is June 30th. See the details below.

Details of the 2022 Census of Agriculture

NASS Census and Survey Division Director, Barbara Rater, said in the article, “The Census of Agriculture is a collective voice that tells the story and value of American agriculture. The data influences actions and informs policy and program decisions that directly impact producers, their operations, and everyone they touch, which is all of us.” The ag census measures metrics like land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income and expenditures.

The ag census is also open to ag producers of all shapes and sizes. The NASS’s website for the ag census maintains “Even small plots of land – whether rural or urban – growing fruit, vegetables or some food animals count if $1,000 or more of such products were raised and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the Census year.”

Ag producers who have never received an ag census survey need to sign up to get one by June 30th. Those wishing to receive the 2022 Census of Agriculture can sign up here.

Survey respondents will receive a mail ag census survey code in November in order to respond securely online; a hard copy of the questions will be mailed in December. The deadline to complete the survey is February 2023, and the compiled data will be released in 2024.
