Register now to attend the November 19th Winter Weather School to learn about protecting citrus and more from freezing temperatures.

The Sunshine State has been happily free of freezing temperatures in the last few years, but Florida growers know that there is nothing as sure as change. To ensure growers are ready, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension is offering the Winter Weather School educational session on the 19th of November at the UF/IFAS Extension Lake County office. See the details below.

Winter Weather School Details

Scheduled for November 19th at the UF/IFAS Extension Lake County office. Juanita Popenoe, a Lake County UF/IFAS Extension agent, shared that’s Florida’s good luck with cold weather is no guarantee in a UF/IFAS blog. “While we have not had significant freeze damage in recent years, there are increased chances for severe weather events with our current climate conditions… With the neutral El Niño phase we are currently in, this is historically where we have had our worst cold weather spells.”

The education session will focus on winter crop protection measures for citrus, blueberries, and ornamental plants. Attendees will learn about the winter’s a long-range weather outlook, ensuring cold protection systems are ready to go, and the methodology of deciding when to deploy freeze protection measures using accurate weather data and forecasting. “There are a lot of little tricks to make sure a freeze protection system is ready. Making sure you have enough fuel to run the tanks and understanding the best time to turn the irrigation on can be a challenge. If you wait too long, the water will be frozen in the tubes and you cannot protect your crop. We will discuss how to make these decisions,” Popenoe shared.
