UF/IFAS is offering a free nutrient sampling starter kit for citrus growers who attend select citrus meetings in October.

Nutrient sampling is an important factor in any citrus operation. Accordingly, UF/IFAS is launching a new citrus nutrient management program that includes a free nutrient sampling starter kit for attendees of select citrus meetings in October, according to a Citrus Industry article. See the details of the kits below, and where to go to get one.

Nutrient Sampling Starter Kit Details

Citrus Research and Education Center (CREC) Director, Michael Rogers, maintained the kits were “part of a new citrus nutrient management program that IFAS is rolling out this fall,” according to the article. Each kit will handle leaf nutrient and soil sampling for a 20-acre block for a year. The purpose of the kits is to “help growers customize their fertilization programs to the needs of their individual groves … We’re seeing a lot of citrus groves turn around,” Rogers said.

He added that “Growers are pretty desperate to become more efficient with their fertilization use because if … fruit prices continue to drop, we’re going to have to be more efficient with using things like fertilizers that cost money.” UF/IFAS citrus agents and specialists will assist growers with the kits and to make fertilization recommendations based on the test results four times a year.

Growers can get a free kit by attending one of the following citrus meetings:

  • 8 at the CREC in Lake Alfred
  • 23 at the Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce
  • 29 at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in Immokalee
