The results of the American Vegetable Grower’s 2023 State of the Vegetable Industry survey have arrived, disseminated in a Growing Produce article. According to the article, the survey “provides much-needed insight on labor, production, management concerns, and many other topics…” It lists the Top 10 crops in the vegetable industry, as well as growers’ biggest concerns—”labor (always No. 1) government regulations, weather, food safety rules, and pests…crop prices, inflation, weeds, fuel prices, and extreme weather,” See the results below.

- Fresh Tomatoes. Percentage of farms growing crop: 62%. 2022 ranking: 1
- Sweet Bell Peppers. Percentage of farms growing crop: 61%. 2022 ranking: 2
- Zucchini (summer squash). Percentage of farms growing crop: 60%. 2022 ranking: 4
- Percentage of farms growing crop: 59%. 2022 ranking: 3
- Winter squash. Percentage of farms growing crop: 53%. 2022 ranking: 6
- Hot pepper. Percentage of farms growing crop: 51%. 2022 ranking: 5
- Percentage of farms growing crop: 51%. 2022 ranking: 7
- Percentage of farms growing crop: 51%. 2022 ranking: 11
- Percentage of farms growing crop: 50%. 2022 ranking: 9

Other insights from the survey included:
- “More than 50% grow all 10 of the top crops,” compared to 50% or more of last year’s respondents grew the top five crops.
- “Government regulations, often in the No. 2 berth, and always in the top five, came in way down at No. 7.”
- “Crop prices, inflation, and fuel prices all link to post-pandemic supply chain issues and economy.”
