Cattle ranchers and others can sign up to participate in Limpograss Planting Material Distribution Day in July.
“Limpograss (Hemarthria altissima) has a longer season of growth than Bahiagrass or Bermudagrass, so it can help cattle ranchers and dairy farmers bridge the gap between summer perennial grasses and winter annual forages,” shared a UF/IFAS blog. It details how “Limpograss #10 was selected for distribution to Florida ranchers,” and named Gibtuck in honor of Gilbert Tucker. It also shared the citation “Gibtuck provides increased grazing tolerance, greater productivity, and nutritive value compared to previously released cultivars.” (Wallau et al., 2015).”
While “Limpograss is also more tolerant of poorly drained soils than either of our traditional summer perennial grasses,” it must be “planted from fertilized mature stems and not from seed.” To make this forage available to Florida cattle ranchers and dairy farmers, UF/IFAS sells it during Limpograss Planting Material Distribution Day. See the details below.
