Read about the need for micronutrients, and the dangers—and signs—of micronutrient toxicity for growers.
Micronutrients “play an outsized role in your crop’s success,” maintained a Growing Produce article. Research is uncovering the importance of these small elements—like boron, zinc, iron, copper, and more—all the time. Nutritional management is moving beyond focusing on only “the big 3” of potassium, nitrogen, and phosphate and “secondary elements are moving from an afterthought to a front-line tool in crop production.” Micronutrients can have a big impact on yield and quality for many crops. However, overapplying some micronutrients can be very unforgiving, leading to toxicity. See what
The Benefits of Micronutrients
Micronutrients might not be in the “essential element” category, but they are essential for many different crops. According to the expanded article, crops that need micronutrients include:
- Boron and zinc are necessary for fruit set in many crops.
- “In almonds, for example, boron is required for pollen tube development. Without it, fertilization fails and yields crash.”
- “For leafy greens, iron is key to photosynthesis.”
- Micronutrients help many crops deal with heat waves.
Signs of Micronutrient Toxicity
The article advised that “Micronutrient toxicity typically shows up too late to reverse.” Signs of toxicity from micronutrients include:
- Leaf bronzing
- Leaf curling
- Distorted shoot growth
The article shared that “Most micronutrient formulations contain only 5% to 6% of the target metal. That’s deliberate — it’s designed to reduce risk.” It’s important to know what your crops need in terms of micronutrients and how to apply them precisely.
